Beautility
This new photobook, the eighth publication from Jethro Marshall, is inspired by his exhibition of the same name.
Compiling and juxtaposing his rural typologies into one book for the first time, Beautility has five distinct chapters featuring old and new work. Spread over 56 newsprint pages, the black and white scenes of the built environment around his native West Country pay homage to the overlooked and undervalued, the beauty of the utilitarian, the importance of the mundane.
Featuring imagery and essays from previous books - Farm Follows Function, Coastal Brutalism, This is Hardcore & Building Society, the book also previews a new series on buildings of faith - Parish Metro.
It’s a selective review of Jethro’s work of the last seven years where he presents his ‘anti-bucolic, pro-rural’ lens on the landscape, plus a fresh presentation of pictures alongside one another as they tell a story greater than the sum of their parts.
The book is printed on 55gsm Improved newsprint, with self covers, numbered as an edition of 80 copies and with a debossed publisher mark. It comes in a 250gsm black custom envelope with a grey foil title.
In her foreword, writer Leanne Cloudsdale notes -
“Every structure in this book is a response to fundamental human needs: meaning, shelter, movement, work, rest, and survival in a specific landscape. Moulded by bodies, belief and a shared existence on planet earth. This is architecture and history holding hands, combining forces to embody the same impulse. Continuation of the dream. Epic and local. Normal nirvana. The quiet stewardship of our towns, cities, hamlets, and hedgerows isn’t an abstract idea. This is mindful maintenance of our united inheritance. “
Includes essay excerpts from writers Sam Jacob, Mark Hooper, Christopher Stocks and a new foreword by Leanne Cloudsdale.
