Halls & Oats is a photographic survey of Wessex village halls, shot by Jethro Marshall through the Autumn/ Winter of 2019 in South Somerset, West Dorset & East Devon. A typology of sorts, as much sociological record as architectural document. The book is introduced with an essay by designer & commentator, Sam Jacob:

“The hall itself is a statement of intent, a covenant – a promise even – of the possibility of community. Mutual and co-operative, they are of the people for the people. Democracy as space rather than representation.”

These mundane landmarks for rural Britain are presented in timeless, anonymous greyscale. Late 19th & 20th century buildings designed with efficiency and randomly extended by committee, are each captioned with local detail.
